It is this thing called SharePoint!

Whilst SharePoint 2010 is more intuitive than previous versions, mainly due to emulating the Office 2010 interface, it is still a new environment that users need to get comfortable with. In many cases how we expect users to transition users across to SharePoint is not considered and typically (because it is an IT managed change) a project ends when the final team site has been created.

It goes something like this…. Continue reading ‘It is this thing called SharePoint!’

PRMA Case Study

PRMA Matrix is the name given to the new SharePoint based Intranet for PRMA Consulting based in the UK.   Sei-IS Business Consultancy have managed the design, build and implementation of the project as well as the efforts required to change the business to adopt the new installation which of course is still happening.

Shortly we will be adding a link to SharePoint Boutique who partnered to complete the project.  They will produce a case study for the technical details of the build.  This is just an overview of the project and functionality delivered.  More information available from SteveDalby@sei-is.be .

Power Day Plus

All projects require a specific level of Business Change to be successful and SharePoint is no exception.  In fact it could be that as SharePoint touches nearly every employee then it is a greater part of the critical project timeline.

We have found that training is the best way to ensure that the investment $, £ or € in your SharePoint project is successful.  However to ensure that the message gets home ot your users we combine this with a medium amount of floor walking to visit the user at their desktop and ensure that they understand what and how SharePoint does.  This ensures that the key messages are delivered in the context of the user and their way or working. Effective SharePoint training

I have been training for many years and never does it fail to impress me how much people want to learn and understand about the subject being taught.  Well most people… sometime my students are dragged into class by their managers and have a week of learning when all they can think about is the work sitting on their desks when they get back icon sad Effective SharePoint training Continue reading ‘Effective SharePoint training’

SharePoint the shape changer

Has your project changed the shape of your business

Training has always been a key attribute of a business change program.  This is mainly due to the fact that change is based on new processes or new IT applications and systems being released.

With any SharePoint project the training and business change requirements at the end should not be ignored or treated as a ‘nice to have’ if you want SharePoint to change the shape of your business. Continue reading ‘SharePoint the shape changer’

Managing Information Management !!

Sei IS Managing Information Management !!
Pure Knowledge: Nothing More-Nothing Less

I recently had to outline for a client the steps they needed to take to move from a solutions driven Information strategy to a governance driven Information strategy.  The objective was to consider how this apparent low-priority set of tasks could in the longer term mean cost efficient management of company data and even today save resource time by reducing the time to find the most relevant data.

The neutralised report is attached which I will hope might assist you in fleshing out your Information Management plans.  Open here  Short White Paper on Information Management

Nintendo D3S or whatever….

Was incredibly impressed with my daughters 3D Nintendo this afternoon… yes I have now let her play with it after testing it to make sure it is safe icon smile Nintendo D3S or whatever....

The 3D is very good and works without Glasses but you do need to be a set distance away from the small screen to get the full effect which is pretty impressive (Full size TV’s using similar technology are being developed).

Now as much as the 3D is great, the games that use the camera to place the action on your kitchen table are way better… you place a card on the table and focus the game onto the card at which point a dragon appears sitting on the table with targets front, rear and side which have to be shot by walking around the table… the Dragon launches itself at you in 3D and when shot disappears down a hole in the table…. pure magic and again very impressive.

I have to keep telling myself that this is a game and I have seen similar I-Phone games using the accelerators to turn you into a gun touting monster.
The thing is that before playing this game I was impressed with the graphical capability of my Microsoft Office 2010 PowerPoint slides and their ability to deliver a message… how much cooler would that message be if it was delivered by a dragon that steps out of the audience… walks onto the stage and delivers the Key statements of the presentation to thunderous applause….

This is a great application that I can use in my classroom or standing in front of a conference… the only problem that seems to stop it is…. its a Toy… not for adult use.

Boy has PowerPoint got a long way to go!!!

A Love-Hate-Relationship…. On-line v Classroom training

CDM logo with tag A Love Hate Relationship.... On line v Classroom trainingI like practical ideas and solutions.  I live in Flemish-Belgium as a Brit and have watch this wonderful country base it’s decisions on common sense… you purchase bin bags for your rubbish at 5 euro each for a single bin liner… and this bin liner is specific to your local community and rubbish collection contract (use any other 5euro-cent bin liner and it is not collected) so in simple practical terms, you pay for what you throw away.  Recyclable items are placed in cheaper separate bags (which are not collected if they include non-recyclable items)   …Pure practical solution. Phone 7… step one

Windows Phone 7 HTC HD7 Full Specification Phone 7... step oneOn Monday I had dinner with my Son and Daughter for Christmas and she had some new pictures of my Grandson on her Samsung Galaxy.  Gimme Gimme I said and she proceeded to enable bluetooth and to send them to my new HD7 phone running Microsoft Phone 7 system.  It would not work whilst transferring them to my sons phone worked without a hitch.

For an instant I was disappointed but then thought of the great smooth interface the phone has, the very cool way it allows me to manage my business and communications.  Regardless of the press comments I love this phone.

Now don’t get me wrong, I would love to get hold of the game I played on the I-Phone that allowed me to shoot helicopters whilst spinning around trying to find them or be a sniper on a tall building saving the president, just two of the cool games I have experienced on an I-Phone… but the phone to me is about keeping in touch with business, family and friends which this phone does in style.

Yes OK I would like to cut and paste and the send button is too close to the delete button when messaging in landscape but nothing is perfect and this is the first release.

In short if you are in business and communicating with people is key then go with a phone that is built for business… in my mind the Windows Phone 7 does just that simply, with style and very efficiently.

Can’t wait for step two

Governance… Big Project or Small Project but always important

Sei-IS always pride itself on supporting the customer and this is a key consideration as the project goes live. Recently we completed a project which is essence is a single site built on the SharePoint 2010 platform that in effect is a ‘Super’ meeting workspace. The idea is that it will manage the key elements of a meeting (dah!) which are all based on documents, different kinds of documents but documents none the less.

So such a simple site requires some simple governance… who do I speak to when I need help, who takes responsibility when it goes wrong, what availability is the business looking for and 20 other questions…. 20 why 20 you are asking… well I don’t know but there must be 20 so what are they….
